Located 240km from Colombo, Hambantota resides amidst sweeping sandy beaches where outrigger fishing canoes can be seen dotted in the horizon. More favourable to the independent traveller, this south coast town is fast becoming a fully fledged holiday resort and is a perfect base for exploring the nearby Bundala National Park, temples at Kataragama or Yala National Park.

Northeast of Hambantota (80km) is Sri Lanka's second most sacred place of pilgrimage, Kataragama. The many Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus that make the pilgrimage during July and August come to see the famous Hindu Shrine (Devale) and Dageba (Buddhist Pagoda - Kirivehera). Kataragama is a multi-religious sacred city where the shrine sits among woodland on the banks of the holy river, Menik Ganga (river of jewels).

Yala hosts Sri Lanka's most reputable wild life safari at Ruhuna National Park. The park is home to an abundance of mammals where leopards, crocodiles, elephants, deer, bear, and wild buffalo can be sighted. The majestic peacock, as well as a huge variety of other bird species including the flamingo can also be spotted. The park is hugely diversified with dense jungles, open field areas, lagoons, rocky habitats and a stunning sea front.
