The Central Highlands are encompassed by
hills beyond hills. The mountainous slopes are set in a cooler
climate, acres and acres of tea plantations govern the winding
roads. "Tea-pluckers" can be seen scattered throughout the landscape
picking the buds off tea bushes that go on to form the most
famous brew in the world "Ceylon Tea". Beautiful cascading waterfalls
flow down the lush mountain terrains. Elevated above 2000 metres,
the near-by Horton Plains is the islands last remaining mountain
forest in extent of 3,150 hectares, a bird watcher's paradise,
boasting some of the richest varieties of bird-life. Nuwara
Eliya, once a hill station for the British is the country's
highest situated town and still holds its' quaint colonial feel
with Tudor and Georgian architecture.
